A Hidden Treasure

“Creative American Country Cuisine”

It was getting late on Easter Sunday, Katie and I scrambled to finish primping as my dad paced in the adjacent hotel room.

“Ready Freddy?” I asked Katie as I bounced on the bed towards the phone. She nodded in response. We were both pretty unenthusiastic about dinner. We didn’t really care where we went as long as we were in for some good food.

Little did I know I was about to be en route to an incredible special-occasion-priced restaurant.

“Where we goin’ dad?”

“Tarpy’s Roadhouse!” he said with an exaggerated hillbilly accent. I rolled my eyes as we all chuckled and piled in the car.

Nestled along the Monterey-Salinas Highway is Tarpy’s Roadhouse. Tarpy’s is a beautiful 1917 Five Star American Country Cuisine Roadhouse. This beautiful Roadhouse is classy but not overbearingly fancy. The atmosphere is friendly and service is great.

We entered the picturesque restaurant the ambiance was cozy yet elegant. There were framed pictures and documents of the Tarpy’s history.

“The wood-burning grill provides wonderful flavors for wild game, the freshest seafood and prime steaks. Set on five landscaped acres, the patios and extensive gardens provide a refreshing backdrop for hearty sandwiches, vegetarian entrees and tempting salads. This restaurant in Monterey has seven private and semi-private rooms available for banquets, meetings and celebrations. The full bar, award-winning wine list and knowledgeable professional service ensure a terrific dining experience. Reservations are recommended. Tarpy’s also offers affordable full-service, off-site catering” – Taken from http://www.tarpys.com/

Now getting to the good part: The Food.

Appetizer:

Barbacoa Beef Brisket on crisp blue corn tortilla chips. There was no time to take a picture as the savory tender meat eclipsed my thoughts of documenting this meal. The soft juicy beef was perfectly contrasted by the crunch of the crisp blue corn tortilla chips.

Entrée:

Maple-Brined Berkshire Pork Chop with dried cherry merlot reduction over onion sage stuffing

Side:

Spud Sampler: Fries, Gruyere Scalloped Potatoes, and Roasted Garlic Mashed Potatoes

Dessert:

Lemon Cheesecake drizzled with Raspberry Coulis served with whipped cream

The ending scene of the dinner table perfectly depicted our enjoyment of the cuisine.
